Apart from the fact that they taste so good, berries are more nutritious than most people realise. There is more Vitamin C in 8 strawberries than in an orange and strawberries are high in folic acid. The antioxidant properties from components such as flavinoids in soft fruit in general have considerable health benefits, and a higher consumption could reduce the risk of heart disease.
It is claimed that strawberries can even alleviate sunburn, blisters and blemishes on the face. Slice them in half and place on the problem areas for 10 minutes or so.
In Medieval times, stonemasons used strawberry designs on altars and pillars to symbolise perfection and righteousness – maybe they had a point!
